PRESS RELEASE: Edinburgh Fringe regulars, Pimp$ouls, announced as presenters of the Oswestry Heritage Bake-Off

But will the high energy double act be serving up any double entendres as Oswestry’s answer to Mel and Sue of BBC Bake Off fame?
Fresh from a successful summer tour, including a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, improvised comedy and hip hop performers Pimp$ouls are already preparing for their next gig.
This time father and son duo, Terry Cripps and Dru Cripps-Hughes, will be honing their improvisational skills in the kitchen as presenters of Oswestry’s take on the BBC’s Great British Bake Off.
Produced by HOOOH Community Group, the Oswestry Heritage Bake Off is being filmed as part of the town’s acclaimed programme of activities to mark Heritage Open Days. The annual national festival takes place over four days, this year from September 8 to 11, providing the public with fun and imaginative ways to discover their local history, archaeology and cultural heritage.
Rising sponges and apricot glaze may be new territory for Pimp$ouls, but the fearless pair are used to dealing with curve balls and thinking on their feet. Audience participation is a trademark of their improvisation act, so they are confident they will cope with every eventuality during the bake off filming as Oswestry’s answer to Mel and Sue.
With Terry and Dru on hand with words of encouragement, three finalists will compete in the five hour bake off at North Shropshire College on September 9. Their heritage inspired cakes will be judged the next day and the winner announced in a specially dressed bake off tent at the foot of Oswestry Castle.
Terry said: “It’s nice to be involved with a home town project promoting local heritage, as we usually have to travel to showcase our improvised drama and dance performance.
“We like the idea of Oswestry’s very own bake off. Cakes and heritage sound perfect for a bit of improvisation and we aim to sprinkle proceedings with a generous dusting of fun.”
He added: “Strangely, it will be the second time this year we have been involved in food related filming. It also featured in a programme pilot which we took part in earlier this summer for a major TV channel.”
Pimp$ouls first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013 with their two-man street dance act ‘Battle of the Ages’. An instant crowd-pleaser, pulling audiences of almost 800, they took it back in 2014 and 2015 due to popular demand. Their recent tour has taken them to Camp Bestival on the south coast and Kaya festival in South Wales, finishing at the Edinburgh Fringe where they debuted a new show devised by Dru called ‘2 Broke Robots’.
As breakdance and body-popping specialists, the two regularly cause a stir at national jams in London and Nottingham. They perform and lead dance and drama workshops around the UK, and also make time to run sessions at Hermon Arts Centre in Oswestry.
But what we really want to know is whether Terry and Dru will be dabbling in any double entendres as they take on the roles of Mel and Sue, now infamous for their soggy bottoms and risqué line in baking innuendo?
All will be revealed when the final film, being shot and edited by Wrexham-based Filmage, premieres at kinokulture cinema in Oswestry later this autumn.
*The finalists’ cakes will be on display to the public at Oswestry Castle Bank on September 10 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
